Malta Pushes Culture For 2008

Initial reports suggest that the holiday island of Malta has had a best ever year for tourism in 2007, and is now considering how she can broaden her appeal.

With a history dating back thousands of year tourism bosses have decided that a mix of history and culture is a market the island can tap in 2008, and will be marketing it to the UK and other European countries.

Speaking recently Malta's tourism Minister noted that visitor numbers had risen each month since November 2006 - this was due though to the low cost airlines starting to fly to Malta, more than anything the government had done or the tourism board to promote Malta as a holiday destination.

Commenting on the need to diversify the range of holidays Malta is able to offer potential visitors, he said:

'Today we cannot rely any more on the formula 'sun, sea and sand'. We are diversifying our product into new tourism segments, namely cultural tourism, English language learning, conferences and incentives, sports, and Gozo as a destination on its own. Together these segments make up about 40 per cent of all tourists coming to Malta. This means that we are on the right track of diversification.'

At the moment some 150,000 tourists visit Malta each year specifically for the island's history and culture, but there is no specific target set to hit in the coming years.

Commenting on Malta's pitch for the culture and heritage market, a local travel guide says 'From what we can see there isn't a figure the tourism bosses have in mind - and that's hardly surprising given their dismal record in the past when it come to attracting holidaymakers to Malta.'

The optimism from Malta is in sharp contrast to just a couple of years ago when some major holiday companies were considering dropping Malta as a holiday option altogether.

With a downward spiral in visitor numbers in successive years, the Maltese government finally relented to pressure from the Malta holidays industry and allowed low cost carriers to fly to the island for the first time in November 2006.

Competition was keen between the airlines to take up the lucrative UK to Malta route, and Dublin based Ryanair was chosen over rivals easyJet to take up the route, and the island has benefitted this year with a sharp increase in tourists, reversing six years of decline.

Since then the island's tourist authorities have finally waken up to the fact that competition in the skies could bring more benefits to the country than protecting her national airline, and new routes have opened between Malta with Germany, Spain and Scandanavia.

New official figures show that this year's all important summer season has been the best in six years for Malta, reversing the decline in fortunes for the Mediterranean island.

The good news for Malta is that despite the increase in the number of tourists arriving on the island via low cost flights, the occupancy levels of hotels has increased from basic to 5 star, showing that Malta can appeal to all, which is why perhaps culture and history are seen as sectors of the travel market that could bring even more visitors to the island, but time will tell if government led directions can really be beneficial for Malta's holiday and airline industries.

Kitt Peak National Observatory, the world's largest collection of telescopes, is located high above the Sonoran Desert on the Tohono O'odham Reservation, 55 miles southwest of Tucson, AZ. Home to 22 optical and two radio telescopes, the observatory represents dozens of astronomical research institutions and is operated by the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO). The attraction is ideal for student group travelers interested in science and astronomy.

In 1958 Kitt Peak was selected as the site for the national observatory and was built through a grant by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The land was leased on a perpetual agreement from the Tohono O'odham tribe. The observatory with 23 telescopes is the largest, most diverse gathering of astronomical instruments in the world. The most famous telescope at Kitt Peak is the McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope, the largest solar telescope in the world. Kitt Peak is also famous for having the first telescope, an old 91 cm reflector, which was originally used to search for near-Earth asteroids.

The Kitt Peak National Observatory Visitor Center is open daily to visitors from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. Guided tours are offered daily at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 1:30 p.m. and group tours are available by appointment.

The center offers three, one-hour guided tours that begin in the visitor center with a brief introductory orientation:

- The first tour begins at 10 a.m. and visits the McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope.
- The second tour begins at 11:30 a.m. and visits the 2.1-m Telescope, one of the early workhorses of Kitt Peak. Built in 1964, the telescope is still in high demand each night.
- The third tour begins at 1:30 p.m. and visits the Mayall 4-m Telescope, a Tucson landmark since 1973. Visible from many points in Tucson, the 4-m is the largest optical telescope on Kitt Peak, and receives four times more requests for use than there are clear nights each year. From the Visitor Gallery in the telescope, students have a 360-degree view of Kitt Peak and the surrounding landscape.

Students who participate in the Nightly Observing Program have the opportunity to view some of the finest night skies on earth. This 3-hour program is available from July through mid-October and begins at approximately 9 p.m. Students arrive prior to sunset so they can observe the sun setting over the Tohono O-odham Reservation. Their evening begins with a tour of the exhibits, interactive displays, and a light meal. Then, the observatory staff review recent advances in the field of astronomy to provide an understandable perspective of the earth's place in the universe.

Following the orientation, students then take a visual journey through the cosmos with the aid of the observatory's three telescopes. Gathering in one of the Visitor Center's domes, students observe the heavens through a reflecting telescope. Observers see highlights of the particular time of year, such as planets, multiple star systems, planetary nebulae, and galaxies.

Observers also become acquainted with the Summer Triangle, which involves three special stars, each located in a separate celestial constellation. Taken together, these three stars, Altair, Deneb, and Vega, form a large triangle, easily discernable in the Tucson sky with the naked eye,

The observatory's Weather Program was created to allow visitors access to the site, even when conditions are not conducive to watching the skies. The program includes many portions of the regular Nightly Observing Program such as a light meal, followed by an introduction to the National Observatory and a look at the hands-on display of telescopes.

The program also teaches students how to use star charts and allows them to participate in activities using binoculars and scaled models. It concludes, if the weather permits, with a view of the universe through a telescope.

Reopened in November 2005, Top of the Rock welcomes visitors to a unique venue, removed from the hustle and bustle of the city. The renowned attraction provides lessons in history and geography that culminate with unparalleled views from the newly renovated Observation Deck on the 70th floor.

Rockefeller Center covers 22 acres and is located between Fifth and Seventh Avenues in Manhattan. It was built by the Rockefeller family, and named after John D. Rockefeller Jr. who began its development in 1930. At the time, it was the largest private building project ever undertaken in modern times. Construction was completed in 1939 when Rockefeller drove the final silver rivet into 10 Rockefeller Plaza. In 1987, it was officially declared a National Historic Landmark.

The observation deck itself was opened to the public in 1933 as a gift to the people of New York - a monument to Manhattan. After it was closed to the public in 1986, Top of the Rock underwent a $75 million renovation and re-opened in November 2005, with three lower levels and three upper levels housed in the 70-story building.

Views from the observation deck are unobstructed for 360 degrees and stretch for miles in every direction. Top of the Rock includes a panorama of Central Park and the northern half of Manhattan that can't be found anywhere else. History And Music Live At The Apollo Theater

Since 1934, every Wednesday evening aspiring artists take the stage at New York City's Apollo Theater. They come with hopes that the magic of the historical theater and the approval of the audience will launch their careers in the music world.

The new owner's motivation for featuring African American talent and entertainment was attributed to the fact that the theater's surrounding neighborhood, Harlem, was made up mostly of African American residents. Black entertainers were also cheaper to hire and offered quality shows for reasonable rates. One of the theater's first African American Amateur Nights featured a young dancer Ella Fitzgerald, who quickly went on to became a singing sensation.

The Apollo Theater also featured old-time vaudeville favorites such as Tim Moore, Dewey "Pigmeat" Markham, and Moms Mabley, and in later years launched the careers of contemporary entertainers such as Diana Ross and the Supremes, The Jackson 5, and Mariah Carey.

In the 1950s, Buddy Holly and the Crickets, with their rhythm and blues background, were initially mistaken for an African American group and booked to play at the Apollo. At first the crowd booed the white performers, but their talent eventually won over the audience and they were accepted.

Although the club fell into decline in the 1970s, it made a comeback in the 1980s through a spirited campaign launched to revive public interest. Eventually, the Apollo Theater was recognized as a national, state, and city landmark.

Today, the Apollo is open six events a week, and features performing arts troupes, community programs, concerts, and special events. It is New York's third most popular tourist attraction, and draws an estimated 1.3 million visitors a year.

Aberdeen: The Granite City's Architectural Wonders

Aberdeen is an exquisite architectural wonder that boasts of its own unique and sublime feel and personality. It is known as Granite City and even a cursory glance at Aberdeen will tell first-time visitors why it has earned this tag. The city consists of many places where entire blocks of buildings and streets are made of granite, particularly near the city centre.

Perhaps the spirit of Aberdeen is most evident on Union Street, one of Britain's most prominent and imposing thoroughfares where, for a time, all the principal shops and majority of the public buildings were all made from granite. Union Street was named in honour of the Act of Union with Ireland in 1800 and was constructed from 1801 to 1805. The street leads to Denburn ravine and to Union Bridge, a gleaming granite arch that spans 40 meters.

Union Street is home to some of the most widely renowned structures in Aberdeen, including Music Hall, Trinity Hall (now a shopping mall), Town and County Bank, Palace Hotel, the National Bank Scotland and the former office of the Northern Assurance Company. A portion of Union Street crosses the Denburn ravine near Union Bridge, which features a fine granite arch that is 132 ft (40 m) wide.

Moving east of Union Street will lead you to Castle Street, another haven of fine architecture such as the impressive Town Hall. While it is known locally as the headquarters of the city council, visitors to Aberdeen are often left in awe of this elegant granite edifice rendered in Franco-Scottish Gothic style that is easily one of the most amazing in all of Scotland. It contains a huge hall, oak-panelled walls and a timber ceiling as well as the Sheriff Court House and the Town and County Hall. Paintings of royalty and other prominent personalities adorn the walls, including Prince Albert, the fourth Earl of Aberdeen, several Lord Provosts and others.

The entrance of the Town Hall has a vestibule where a suit of black armour, believed to belong to Provost Sir Robert Davidson, stands watch. On one corner stands a 64-meter grand tower that provides a broad view of the city and its surrounding countryside.

Beside the Town Hall is the Archibald Simpson pub, a Greek Revival-style establishment that was formerly the North of Scotland Bank building. Across the street is the Union Bank building, which was redeveloped into the High Court in 2005, only the third permanent high court to sit in Scotland.

An imposing medieval castle, now known as The Salvation Army Citadel, sits at the upper end of Castle Street, facing another landmark, the Mercat Cross, which was constructed in 1686. The Cross is six meters wide and five meters high and stands on a large hexagon base which is decorated with a host of medallions depicting Scottish monarchs, from James I to James VII. A military barracks used to stand on the east side of Castle Street until it was demolished in 1965. Two tower blocks now stand on the site.

Finally, on Broad Street, visitors to Aberdeen must visit Marischal College, the second largest granite building in the world and a fine example of Britain's Edwardian architecture. It was inaugurated by King Edward VII in 1906.

Aside from its buildings, the Aberdeen cityscape is also lined by a number of imposing bridges that are architectural wonders in their own right.

There are eight bridges that cross the River Dee and these include, from east to west, Victoria Bridge, Queen Elizabeth Bridge, Wellington Suspension Bridge, Railway bridge, King George VI Bridge, Bridge of Dee, St. Devenick's Bridge and Maryculter Bridge.

Meanwhile, five more bridges cross the River Don and these include, from east to west, Bridge of Don, Brig o' Balgownie, Grandholm Bridge and Persley Bridge.

Before 1832, the Bridge of Dee was the only one way to gain access to the city from the south. This bridge was built during the 16th century and stands 30 feet (10 meters) high 26 feet (8 meters) wide. It features seven ribbed semi-circular arches.

St. Devenick's Bridge, built in 1837, is better known to the locals as the Shakin' Briggie or Shakkin Briggie, or as Morison's Bridge. This cast-iron footbridge is listed as a Category A structure and is slated for restoration.

The Maryculter Bridge, which connects the North and South Deeside roads near the village of Maryculter, is scheduled for expansion soon in line with the Western Peripheral Route that will bypass the city.

The Bridge of Don, built from 1827 to 1832, features five prominent granite arches that are 75 feet (23 meters) wide.

Built by King Robert I, the Auld Brig o' Balgownie has a picturesque single arch that spans the Don River. It is closed to motor vehicles.

Only pedestrians and bicycles can cross Grandholm Bridge, a private bridge of the Crombie Mills which was built in the 1920s. Since 2004, passers-by need a pass to get through the bridge's electronically activated barrier.

My Beijing Excursion--It's More Than a Tour!

If you are looking for a China tour destination, consider Beijing, the capital of China. Depending on your interests, Beijing can be an ideal vacation spot. You can get classic China food, and enjoy countless historical sights. This article presents my 4-day journey in Beijing:

We arrived Beijing airport at a sunset afternoon as scheduled. Our tour guide Tony, a humorous and kind man was waiting us at the airport then escorted us to Guangzhou Hotel, a four star hotel with nice service and facilities. Our first day at Beijing was saved to organize ourselves and get the things prepared.

Tiananmen Square is the first stop for day 2, the largest city square in the world. We walked through this vast square and headed to the big gate of Forbidden City. Why is it called Forbidden City? As for five hundred years (Ming and Qing Dynasty) ordinary people could not enter it. Our Guide Tony told us that original palace buildings first built in 1406 so some of these structures are at least 600 years old. One fascinating detail that stuck in my mind is: There were about 1 million laborers & over 100 000 artisans/craftsmen being required to do the work. Seriously now, it is hard to calculate how much expense has poured into this huge project by a succession of Emperors.

While walking around the Forbidden City I tried to imagine the life of an emperor, surrounded by many eunuchs. The guide also told us the emperor had jade seals with names of his concubines. If he displayed one of the seals the eunuch on duty would bring the concubine immediately. She was brought naked (to prove that she had no weapons)in a rolled carpet to the bedroom of the emperor. Just a part of an Emperor's life!

We visited many palaces. Palace of Highest Harmony, Hall of Supreme Harmony, Palace of Peaceful Longevity is just a few examples. Every palace has its unique functions, but I can't remember every detail now. We also visited the Temple of Heaven today. I have seen many of its pictures, but it is more granderer than it could be. Tony recommended us to watch Pecking Opera Show for our night -time leisure. We are not much of the "cultured" or "historian" by any means, but the performance is really fun and amazing.

We were treated to a table at the front of stage, at which we were served all manner of lovely little cakes and an endless stream of tea! The story is difficult to follow and my ears took several minutes to get used to the sound in the theater.The facial make-ups and costume are rich and various, depicting different characters and remarkable images. With eyes fixing on the stage, I found my necks got pain after the show finished.

Day 3 was a super exciting day because we got to visit the Great Wall-- my dreaming place! Long before I visited China, I have been told that: your visit to China would not be completed without seeing this symbol of China's isolation. Got up early in the morning with water and comfortable shoes, my first destination was Juyongguan Pass. Although on the way, I saw some parts of the great wall on the mountains! Unbelievable! I couldn't wait to climb on it. It's a very difficult way; almost the whole way is up!! I have to take rest many times, and appreciate such construction. Standing at the top and just realize how far and difficult you have covered.

The next destination is Badaling. I also learnt little things about this wonder from the tour guide: On the top of the wall is a road paved with square bricks, wide enough for six horses or ten soldiers to march side by side. On both sides of the road, outer parapet and inner parapet were set. The climb is harder than the first section as the way is follows the contour of the mountains -- it's ascending and descending all the way.

After the Great Wall we back to Beijing downtown and had dinner in a restaurant for Chinese food. There was no scheduled activity at evening time so we had time to stroll around kinds of stores in Beijing downtown. Not for purchase, just wanted to see the lives of Beijing people, the way they live, the things they sell.....

The last highlight of my Beijing tours came at the last day: taking a hutong tours by rickshaw. At my first glance, all hutongs are the same, formed by lining buildings with gray walls and gray tiles. But when you are in it, you will find and experience that every hutong has something special to talk about, as it full of life and stories. The houses along are formed from four small buildings around a courtyard. We find them around Bell-and Drum-Tower north of Beihai Park.

We traveled through the narrow path and saw many local people. They are different from people in Beijing downtown. I felt some kinds of "history" on the face of an old man. I also found many typical little stores in Hutong areas: small hair cutter businesses, small bakeries, vegetable selling - tiny supermarkets daily necessaries, liquor and cigarette stores, bike repair shops, public telephone kiosks - clothes stores and so on.

What also impressed me much is the Scared Road which is a long walkway with 24 animal and 16 human statues lining the path alongside weeping willows, leading us to the Ming tomb. The bargain at Red Bridge Market and Silk Market always delighted me as I got nice Chinese things at good price.

My Beijing Excursion--It's More Than a Tour!

If you are looking for a China tour destination, consider Beijing, the capital of China. Depending on your interests, Beijing can be an ideal vacation spot. You can get classic China food, and enjoy countless historical sights. This article presents my 4-day journey in Beijing:

We arrived Beijing airport at a sunset afternoon as scheduled. Our tour guide Tony, a humorous and kind man was waiting us at the airport then escorted us to Guangzhou Hotel, a four star hotel with nice service and facilities. Our first day at Beijing was saved to organize ourselves and get the things prepared.

Tiananmen Square is the first stop for day 2, the largest city square in the world. We walked through this vast square and headed to the big gate of Forbidden City. Why is it called Forbidden City? As for five hundred years (Ming and Qing Dynasty) ordinary people could not enter it. Our Guide Tony told us that original palace buildings first built in 1406 so some of these structures are at least 600 years old. One fascinating detail that stuck in my mind is: There were about 1 million laborers & over 100 000 artisans/craftsmen being required to do the work. Seriously now, it is hard to calculate how much expense has poured into this huge project by a succession of Emperors.

While walking around the Forbidden City I tried to imagine the life of an emperor, surrounded by many eunuchs. The guide also told us the emperor had jade seals with names of his concubines. If he displayed one of the seals the eunuch on duty would bring the concubine immediately. She was brought naked (to prove that she had no weapons)in a rolled carpet to the bedroom of the emperor. Just a part of an Emperor's life!

We visited many palaces. Palace of Highest Harmony, Hall of Supreme Harmony, Palace of Peaceful Longevity is just a few examples. Every palace has its unique functions, but I can't remember every detail now. We also visited the Temple of Heaven today. I have seen many of its pictures, but it is more granderer than it could be. Tony recommended us to watch Pecking Opera Show for our night -time leisure. We are not much of the "cultured" or "historian" by any means, but the performance is really fun and amazing.

We were treated to a table at the front of stage, at which we were served all manner of lovely little cakes and an endless stream of tea! The story is difficult to follow and my ears took several minutes to get used to the sound in the theater.The facial make-ups and costume are rich and various, depicting different characters and remarkable images. With eyes fixing on the stage, I found my necks got pain after the show finished.

Day 3 was a super exciting day because we got to visit the Great Wall-- my dreaming place! Long before I visited China, I have been told that: your visit to China would not be completed without seeing this symbol of China's isolation. Got up early in the morning with water and comfortable shoes, my first destination was Juyongguan Pass. Although on the way, I saw some parts of the great wall on the mountains! Unbelievable! I couldn't wait to climb on it. It's a very difficult way; almost the whole way is up!! I have to take rest many times, and appreciate such construction. Standing at the top and just realize how far and difficult you have covered.

The next destination is Badaling. I also learnt little things about this wonder from the tour guide: On the top of the wall is a road paved with square bricks, wide enough for six horses or ten soldiers to march side by side. On both sides of the road, outer parapet and inner parapet were set. The climb is harder than the first section as the way is follows the contour of the mountains -- it's ascending and descending all the way.

After the Great Wall we back to Beijing downtown and had dinner in a restaurant for Chinese food. There was no scheduled activity at evening time so we had time to stroll around kinds of stores in Beijing downtown. Not for purchase, just wanted to see the lives of Beijing people, the way they live, the things they sell.....

The last highlight of my Beijing tours came at the last day: taking a hutong tours by rickshaw. At my first glance, all hutongs are the same, formed by lining buildings with gray walls and gray tiles. But when you are in it, you will find and experience that every hutong has something special to talk about, as it full of life and stories. The houses along are formed from four small buildings around a courtyard. We find them around Bell-and Drum-Tower north of Beihai Park.

We traveled through the narrow path and saw many local people. They are different from people in Beijing downtown. I felt some kinds of "history" on the face of an old man. I also found many typical little stores in Hutong areas: small hair cutter businesses, small bakeries, vegetable selling - tiny supermarkets daily necessaries, liquor and cigarette stores, bike repair shops, public telephone kiosks - clothes stores and so on.

What also impressed me much is the Scared Road which is a long walkway with 24 animal and 16 human statues lining the path alongside weeping willows, leading us to the Ming tomb. The bargain at Red Bridge Market and Silk Market always delighted me as I got nice Chinese things at good price.

Educational Travel: Science Under Glass

Whether it began as a scientific experiment or an intriguing sociological test, Biosphere 2 is an impressive world-renowned structure. The 3.5-acre facility, located in Oracle, AZ just north of Tucson, was originally built to serve as an artificial ecological system, but has become an ideal attraction for student group travelers with an avid interest in technology and science.

Constructed from 1987-1991 by Space Biosphere Ventures, the original biosphere was designed to test if and how people could live and work in a closed structure. It was the ultimate experiment under glass to explore the complex web of interactions within life systems. Today, Biosphere 2 is operated by the University of Arizona, which uses the site as a laboratory to study climate change. Original Biosphere financier Edward Bass gave the university an additional $30 million to preserve and maintain the site.

With a size comparable to two and a half football fields, Biosphere 2 is the largest closed system ever created. The sealed nature of the structure allows scientists to monitor the ever-changing chemistry of the air, water, and soil within. The structure is comprised of mangrove wetlands, savannah grassland, desert, agricultural system, living quarters, and a 1 million-gallon ocean.

Since 2006, the structure has no longer been maintained in an airtight state and its accessibility to the outside world has been expanded with the "World of Discovery Under the Glass" Tour. For the first time since its construction, student group travelers can now explore the entire Biosphere 2 on a fully guided tour along a newly built trail system which traverses most of the structures wilderness ecosystems.

Group tours begin in the human habitat where students can see one of the apartments that the original inhabitants of the biosphere lived in, the farm where they grew their crops, and the kitchen where their meals were prepared. Also on view is the command-and-control room, where scientist's monitored data collected by hundreds of sensors.

Located within the habitat is "Climate Change and Life on Earth," an exhibit that examines past climate changes on earth, greenhouse warming, the causes of its impact on humans, and the choices people will have to make to manage the planet.

The tour then continues through the airlock door into the wilderness area. The first environment student's encounter is the tropical savanna. The trail system then travels along a 40-foot ocean cliff for a dramatic look above the ocean. Moving along the trail, students descend into the lower savanna and the lush mangrove through the tropical thron scrub, and into the coastal fog desert.

The techno sphere gives touring groups a view of all of the mechanical systems that make it possible to control the environments of the Biosphere. Inside, students can descend through a tunnel into one of the Biosphere's two lungs. These large geodesic domes originally prevented the massive structure from exploding or imploding its airtight state. Essentially, the lungs allowed the Biosphere to grow larger during the day when it was warmer, and shrink due to cooler air during the night. The tour then moves to the underwater ocean viewing gallery exhibit before concluding at the stating point on the hill overlooking the biomes.

Self-guided tours of the exterior of the Biosphere 2 are also available. They begin with an orientation movie and then the visitors see the human habitat, climate change exhibit, and ocean viewing gallery.

Stade de France Stadium In St Denis France

Saint Denis is a suburb around 10km from the centre of Paris along the river Seine and has specific claims to fame.

The first is that the area was named after Saint Denis who became known as the Patron Saint of France, where St Genevieve had a small chapel erected over his tomb for pilgrims to visit.

The second is that it is known for the Saint Denis Basilica where a vast majority of French Kings are also entombed here and this was rebuilt on the site of the chapel.

If you have time whilst you are on holiday in the Paris area, taking a trip out to St Denis is a very worthwhile and enjoyable experience for all the family. And although it used to be more of a working class industrial area, it is again now a thriving community since the stadium has been built.

The stadium was a major feat of engineering with a very clever design that allows it to be changed from a football or rugby stadium, through to a running track, through to holding rock and pop concerts. This was all achieved by a cushion of air that allows the lower stands to slide out in approximately 72 hours, dependant upon the different configurations needed. And for the last few years has played host to some very major sporting events including the FIFA World Cup and the World Championships in Athletics.

Although the stadium is designed to hold 80,000 people, Celine Dion broke the records with 2 nights of an attendance of 90,000 fans for each night at her concerts! But rather than going to the stadium for an event, you can take a tour of this fantastic place and walk the paths of stars. But always check to ensure it is open for tours prior to getting excited, as it will be closed on specific dates due to functions and other major events going on.

But while in the area do take a stroll round Saint Denis itself, as it has a well-known market, which is also one of the largest in the Ile de France region and it plays host to numerous events every year. Instead of just thinking about the Stade de France that holds sporting events and concerts, festivals such as the festival of Saint Denis for classical music and the Banlieues Bleues Festival for jazz music amongst others are held in this area every year.

Yet if you are not into lively entertainment, perhaps you would be more at home visiting the Basilique de Saint Denis, which even has life size figures of the past monarchs that are entombed in it. And it is steeped in history from when the basilica we see today was first begun in the Gothic style way back in 1136 even though it was never finished to the 13th Century. But you can trace the history right through to the last king that was interred here, who was King Louis XVIII and is comparable with Westminster Abbey in England where people still go and worship.

The architecture and the beautiful stained glass windows that were restored to their former glory, make for an impressive building and today it remains the largest museum of funerary sculpture in France, containing the tombs and recumbent statues of over 70 kings and queens. Plus you will be pleased to know that it is open every day of the year for people to go and visit.

There is something fascinating for everyone in St Denis and it is well worth a short trip out if you have the time whilst you are on holiday in this incredible area of France.

Welcoming Immigrants to America for More Than a Century

She's one of the country's most recognized women and she has aged gracefully since her arrival in 1886. Lighting the way for immigrants, visitors, and travelers, the Statue of Liberty was presented to the United States by France in commemoration of the country's centennial and as a gesture of friendship from France. Student group travelers who make the journey to see her are rewarded with a new sense of citizenship and pride.

Standing at Liberty Island, the statue has served as the ultimate symbol of a new life, freedom, and opportunity for all who have gazed upon her. From 1886 until the early 1950's, she was often one of the first glimpses of the United States for millions of immigrants when their voyage from Europe arrived in New York.

Sculpted by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, funds for the construction of the Statue of Liberty were raised through the sale of miniatures. Dressed in a robe and a halo of seven-point spiked rays, the statue is made of a sheeting of pure copper, hung on a framework of steel. The stone tablet she holds in her right hand bears the world "JULY IV MDCCLXXVI" (July 4, 1776), commemorating the date of the United States Declaration of Independence.

Located on a 12-acre island, the Statue of Liberty National Monument is operated by the National Park Service. Student group travelers reach the island by the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Ferry system. A time pass reservation system allows a limited number of visitors a day to visit the monument. Visitors have access to the museum gallery and pedestal observation level. Since Sept. 11, 2001, full access to the monument has been restricted and there is no access beyond the pedestal level.

After visiting the statue, student group travelers will find a fascinating study of American history at Ellis Island, which served as the premier federal immigration station from 1892-1954. Ellis Island acquired its name from Samuel Ellis, a colonial New Yorker, possibly from Wales.

The island has a rich history before it became the gateway to freedom. Initially, the local Indian tribes called it Gull Island. Later, it served as a harbor fort, a hanging site for pirates, and an ammunition and ordinance depot named Fort Gibson.

During its sixty-two years of operation, Ellis Island processed more than 12 million immigrant steamship passengers. The very first immigrant to arrive at Ellis Island was Annie Moore, a 15-year-old Irish girl, traveling with her two brothers. Coincidently, it was also Annie's birthday and under the watchful eyes of immigration officials, Superintendent Colonel John Weber presented Annie with a $10 gold Liberty coin. Other notable immigrants processed through Ellis Island include Frank Capra, Irving Berlin, Max Factor, and Bob Hope.

Thirty years after its closing the main building was restored and reopened in 1990 as a museum. Designed as a self-guided museum, it has three floors of displays and exhibits detailing the history of the immigration process. For example, "Buttonhooks," devices used by women to lace and button their shoes and boots, provides insights into public health service issues of the day. Doctors used the devices to check immigrants for a highly contagious, and difficult to cure, eye disease.
Student visitors also view the movie, Island of Hope, Island of Tears, an award-winning documentary. Ellis Island was known as "Island of Tears" or "Heartbreak Island" because two percent of the immigrants were not admitted into the United States after their long transatlantic voyage.

Each spring, visiting students can participate in a living history program of an actual immigrant hearing conducted at Ellis Island. Audience participation decides the fate of the immigrant standing before them. Viewing a theatrical production based on actual immigrant accounts is also presented during the spring and summer months.

Audio tours and special ranger-guided tours of the Ellis Island Museum can also be pre-scheduled. Free genealogy workshops can be scheduled in collaboration with the National Archives for those interested in researching their family immigration history.

The World's Oldest Underground System

The London Underground is an underground railway system - also known as a rapid transit system (Tube). London is served by 12 Tube lines. It is the world's oldest underground system. The Underground has 275 stations and runs over 253 miles (408 km) of line.

Since 2003, the Underground has been part of Transport for London (TfL), which also administers numerous other transport-related functions, including the famous red double-decker buses.

In the early 20th century, the presence of six independent operators running different Underground lines caused passengers substantial inconvenience; in many places passengers had to walk some distance above ground to change between lines. In 1933 the Combine and all the municipal and independent bus and tram undertakings were merged into the London Passenger Transport Board (LPTB), a public corporation that approximated in scope to the present-day TfL.

During the 1930s and 1940s, several sections of main-line railway were converted into (surface) lines of the Underground. The first real investment came with the carefully planned Victoria line on a diagonal northeast-southwest alignment beneath central London, which opened in stages between 1968 and 1971. The Piccadilly line was extended to Heathrow Airport in 1977, and the Jubilee line was opened in 1979, taking over part of the Bakerloo line, with new tunnels between Baker Street and Charing Cross. In 1999 the Jubilee was extended to Stratford in London's East End, including the completely refurbished interchange station at Westminster, in several stages.

Since January 2003 the Underground has been operated as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), where the infrastructure and rolling stock are maintained by two private companies (Metronet and Tube Lines) under 30-year contracts, but it remains publicly owned and operated, by TfL.
